What is turmeric used for?

Many of the beneficial effects of curcumin are related to the antioxidant capacity of its components. Curcumin has antioxidant and reactive species scavenger, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activity. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approves its traditional use to increase bile secretion in the treatment of indigestion: fullness, flatulence and slow digestion. More than a hundred clinical studies have been conducted with turmeric rhizome extracts or curcominoids showing its safety, tolerability and efficacy against human diseases as diverse as dyspepsia, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, metabolic syndrome, osteoarthritis, liver disease, cancer, depression, Parkinson's disease, cognitive impairment, premenstrual syndrome, endometriosis, psoriasis, gingivitis, lichen planus, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

What is Ginkgo Biloba used for?

Ginkgo leaf has vasoregulatory (arterial vasodilator, venotonic and capillary resistance enhancer) and antiplatelet (platelet-activating factor [PAF] antagonist) activity; it increases tolerance to anoxia (increased glucose and oxygen uptake and reduced cerebral oxygen requirements); and has an antioxidant and neuroprotective effect.

Ginkgo extract has antioxidant activity by scavenging free radicals and inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species. This action has been linked to the prolongation of the half-life of nitric oxide (endothelium-derived relaxing factor) which leads to vascular relaxation and vasodilation. The compounds responsible for the antioxidant activity known so far are mainly flavonoids and also terpenes. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approves its use Well established: for the improvement of age-related cognitive decline and quality of life in mild dementia. - Traditional use: relief of heaviness of the legs and the sensation of cold hands and feet associated with minor circulatory disorders, after the presence of serious diseases has been excluded by a doctor.

What is Taurine for?

The Japanese have one of the longest life expectancies in the world. There are undoubtedly many factors at work in these populations, but one of the most important is the high intake of taurine. Taurine improves cardiac function, increases insulin sensitivity, maintains electrolyte balance, hearing function and immune function.

Taurine is found in the healthy human organism, but some types of diet, whether vegan or vegetarian, do not provide adequate taurine. On the other hand, some pathologies, such as liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes and cancer can lead to a Taurine deficiency. Finally, it should be remembered that during ageing, Taurine synthesis does not reach optimum concentrations, so it is advisable to supplement the diet with a Taurine-based food supplement.

What is Lipoic Acid used for?

Alpha-lipoic acid. It is an indispensable cofactor for various mitochondrial reactions, especially in energy production at the mitochondrial level and in the catabolism of amino acids, acting through various enzymes. LA acts on reactive nitrogen and oxidised species (RNS and ROS) that potentially damage DNA, proteins and fatty acids in the cell membrane.

It eliminates reactive species with a potential 10 times greater than that of other intracellular antioxidants, such as glutathione and vitamin C. LA also acts in the regeneration of other antioxidants. DHLA is a potent antioxidant and involves the regeneration of plasma antioxidants, such as vitamin C and glutathione, and also directly or indirectly acts on the regeneration of vitamin E and on the regeneration of the mitochondrial antioxidant Coenzyme Q10. Chelation of metals such as free iron and copper reduces the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases. It can activate glutathione synthesis by activating the intracellular uptake of cysteine.

What is Boswellia used for?

Boswellic acid has a clear anti-inflammatory action in vitro, as it specifically inhibits 5-lipoxygenase, thus blocking the synthesis of pro-inflammatory substances such as 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE) and leukotriene B4 (LTB4). This anti-inflammatory effect has led to its use in the treatment of chronic rheumatic conditions. In vivo studies using a boswellia extract and comparing it with ketoprofen showed that boswellia significantly reduced the degradation of joint tissue glycosaminoglycans, unlike the drug. In clinical studies, it has been shown to be effective in the treatment of osteoarthrosis (especially knee osteoarthritis), rheumatoid arthritis, chronic colitis (grades I and II), ulcerative colitis (grades II and III), bronchial asthma, cerebral oedema associated with intracranial tumours, gingivitis and skin photoageing.
